Red Moon and the Galaxy |
Region: Middle East Site: Alborz Mountains - Iran Spot: Firouzkooh Date: 2011 June 15 | |||
On June 15, 2011 the totally eclipsed Moon was very dark, with the Moon itself positioned on the sky toward the center of our Milky Way Galaxy. This single-exposure photo is a shot of a image sequence made to create this time-lapse video. The red lunar disk lies in the constellation Ophiuchus near the border with Scorpius and Sagittarius. Along the Milky Way in the middle and upper left are constellations Aquila and Cygnus. Click on the stars icon above the image to see a close-up long exposure composite view of the red eclipsed moon and rich background of nebulosity in the Milky Way including the Lagoon (M8) and Trifid (M20) nebulae.
