Startrails above Lut Desert

By: Amir H. Abolfath

Region: Middle East

Site: Lut Desert - Iran

Date: 2007 April 29

In this moonlit night of April clouds and stars trail above the western horizon of Lut Desert in Kerman province of Iran. Constellation Orion is notable on the left while the dazzling trail in the middle belongs to planet Venus. The giant formation in the foreground is one of many spectacular yardangs in Lut desert. They are hills carved from bedrock or consolidated material by wind, sand, and deflation. Lut Desert has an area of about 51,800 square kilometers and is one of the driest and hottest places on the planet. It has the longest widespread system of yardangs in the world (120 km long) and the world's tallest sand pyramid (nearly 500 m high). Amir Abolfath - Torgheh.ir/en
