Aurora and Meteor By: Bernd Proschold |
Region: Europe Date: September 2010 | |||

A meteor streaks the sky above Hessdalen valley in the central Norway while the dancing northern lights are active in the horizon. Aurora (also known as northern or southern lights) is produced by the collision of charged particles from Earth's magnetosphere, mostly electrons but also protons and heavier particles, with atoms and molecules of Earth's atmosphere (at altitudes above 80 km). The particles originate from the Sun and reach the Earth in the stream of solar wind. See this view in a time-lapse video of dancing aurora and sky in motion. Bernd Proschold/Sternstunden.net
