Jupiter and Milky Way By: Tunc Tezel |
Region: Middle East Site: Mount Uludag - Turkey Spot: Glacial Lakes Plateau Date: 2010 August 12 | |||

The summer view of the Milky Way in the northern hemisphere accompanies the dazzling light of bright planet Jupiter, near the time of its opposition or closest to the Earth. Click on the constellation icon above the image to see the labels. You will notice a faint little dot near Jupiter is planet Uranus, in conjunction with the much brighter planet. Being a smaller gas planet and much further away from us, Uranus is about 3000 times fainter than Jupiter in our night sky. The foreground of the image is Kilimligöl, a high altitude lake (2230 m) of glacial origin on Mount Uludag near Bursa in Turkey. The granite cliffs on the right (south) are lit by a camp fire on the other side of the lake. Tunc Tezel
