Starry Night of Patagonia

By: Stephane Guisard

Region: Americas

Site: Torres del Paine National Park - Chile

Date: February 2009

Time-lapse video: As a night begins in Patagonia stars of Orion and the Milky Way traverse the sky above the famous "Cuernos" (horns) mountains and Pehoé lake in the World Heritage Torres del Paine National Park. The Cordillera del Paine is a small but spectacular mountain group in Chilean Patagonia with spectacular summits known as the Three Towers of Paine. They are gigantic granite monoliths shaped by the forces of glacial ice. Note the passing cars along the lake shore and the passing satellites in the sky. About the middle of the video you might be surprised by a sudden very bright streak of light above Orion. This is a fireball (very bright meteor) captured by the photographer. See the still image of this bright meteor here. Stephane
