Solstice Full Moon Rising at Sounion

Region: Europe

Site: Cape Sounion - Greece

Date: 2010 June 26

The image above is a sample of a prolonged effort by TWAN photographer Anthony Ayiomamitis to capture the rising or setting Moon against the landmarks of Greece. Here the Full Moon rises above the Temple of Poseidon (450-440 BC) in southern Greece. As noted by the photographer "The primary task in such an exercise is to reverse engineer as accurately as possible the perspective of the Temple of Poseidon with respect to its physical azimuth and altitude from my proposed shooting location approximately 1280 meters northwest of the foreground and the primary road which connects Sounion with Athens along the west coast of Attica. Such a distance was both desireable and ideal so as to have a greater balance between the apparent size of the Temple of Poseidon in the foreground and Luna in the background."
The middle photo in this series was highly commended in Earth and Space category of Astrophotographer of the Year 2010 competition of Royal Museums Greenwich. Anthony Ayiomamitis/
