Region: Americas

Site: Mount Wilson - USA

The 100-inch diameter Hooker reflecting telescope of Mount Wilson Observatory was first tested on the stars in 1917. It became one of the most successful large reflecting telescopes in history. It was used by many of the greatest astronomers of the 20th century, including Edwin Hubble whose famous discoveries were made with this telescope. Hubble proved that some "nebulae" were actually galaxies outside our own Milky Way. Notable in the background sky of this image are stars of the Big Dipper. P.K. Chen
