Lava Stars

Site: Hawaii Volcanoes National Park - USA

Date: January 2009

Southern stars Alpha & Beta Centauri as seen over lava flowing into ocean on big island of Hawaii. This lava flows over 30 km (20 miles) in a lava tube from Volcanoes National Park and explodes as it hits the ocean water creating some 600 acres of new land each year. The small lighted dots on each side of the glowing plume are photographers getting close up shots (as well as volcano lava tans). This photograph was taken about a half mile away. Wally Pacholka/
