A Look into Solitude

By: Bernd Proschold

Region: Africa

Site: Namib Desert - Namibia

Date: September 2008

The sun sets over the barren landscape of Namib Desert in this time-lapse video and the Moon and the southern Milky Way appear over the west to south horizon. As the night proceeds and the Moon sets our satellite galactic neighbors, Large and Small Magellanic Clouds appear and circle around the South Celestial Pole. As noted by the photographer "Looking west from the dunes in the NamibRand Nature Reserve is a special experience. This is not just due to the spectacular desert and mountain scenery: It is hard to imagine that there are no men living for the next 6,000 kilometers: 100 kilometers away lies the unsettled shore followed by 5,900 kilometers of ocean."
