Paranal View

By: Stephane Guisard

Region: Americas

Site: Cerro Paranal - Chile

The band of Milky Way above giant telescopes of Cerro Paranal at altitude of about 2600 meters in Atacama Desert of Chile. The four first domes from right are The Very Large Telescope array and the fifth one is an auxiliary telescope. Because of its high altitude, nearly non-existent cloud cover, and lack of light pollution and radio interference from the very widely spaced cities, Atacama desert is one of the best places in the world to conduct astronomical observations.
