Looking westward on a dark moonless night, the only light to reach the ground was coming from the aurora lit sky. So the colors on the snow are matching that of the aurora. The green of oxygen is the only light to light the scene, along with the meager glow offered by the stars themselves. LeRoy Zimmerman/
