From the photographer: "Mono Lake is home of exotic calcium carbonate tufa formations, formed when calcium-rich spring water reaches the alkaline waters of the lake. Mono Lake was the subject of a lot of press recently when a scientist suggested that it might be home to a new form of life which used arsenic instead of phosphorus, but it turned out to be a highly arsenic-tolerant one."
