Opening to the Milky Way

By: Luis Argerich

Buenos Aires, Argentina

2012 January 27

From the photographer: "The photo shows the southern Milky Way fictionally entering the dome of the Mercedes County Observatory in Mercedes, Buenos Aires, Argentina. The telescope can be seen peeking into the dome. The scope is a 24-inch reflector, the 6th largest telescope in Argentina and the biggest one that can be accessed directly by the general public. Each friday the observatory has a session showing different highlights of the night sky to the public. Alpha & Beta Centauri can be seen in the image just above the dome and the nebulosity region of Eta Carina is up next showing a red hue."
