Ancient Monolith Startrail

Boyne Valley, Ireland

May 2008

Heavenly motion of stars above an ancient standing stone. The mysterious monolith is situated at the entrance to the World Heritage Site of Boyne valley at the mouth of the river Boyne, Baltray Co Louth, Ireland. As noted by the local photographer "This 5000-year old celestial sign post really captures your imagination. The image does not do the stone justice; standing at 2.9 meters tall it's only when you stand next to it and feel how solid it is can you appreciate its significance on the landscape. Also note the smaller monolith in the background. Imagine how many coastal storms these two have endured over the Millennia, I think a real testament to men who erected them". Declan McCormack
